I first became interested in runes when I was about nine years old and read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”, which I have read at least a dozen times. I confess to being a hobbit with some elvish blood. I have an unrequited crush on Aragorn, the quintessential tall, dark, silent type *sigh* who turns out to be a diamond in the rough. Anyway, runes show up in LOTR. I recognized them and resonated with them immediately, possibly because of my Swedish/German ancestry or a past life I’ve been told I had in Norway in the 1200s – the approximate time and place of runes’ origin.

My first rune set vanished after many years of faithful service. That hurt me deeply, as they had developed a lovely color and sheen from all the years of being handled. My second set of runes is pictured here. They are oak, made by me, and several years old now.

Look closely and you will see the similarity between the Elder Futhark, as they are called, and our alphabet of today. Some of the runic symbolism still remains in our present-day common knowledge, such as GIFU – the X – representing a kiss. It is a rune that indicates a happy partnership, a gift, the unity of action and intent.

The practical side of me likes systems such as numerology and astrology. The intuitive side uses runes as a tool to align with the person I am reading for and also allows for the person to choose to shift energy through the use of rune scripting. I use runes primarily in phone readings or face-to-face readings where specific situations or questions arise.

This photo shows the rune layouts I use most often. The line of eight grouped by pairs is the spread I usually lead out with to see what’s up. It covers approximately eight weeks and each pair is looked at and then the whole line is synthesized. The cross is just that – to get to the crux of something – the issue, what is at the base, surrounding it, and ahead. The partnership spread – vertical lines to left and right represent two individuals, two pairs, above and below are the foundation and possible future, the center is end result or overall influence. Or sometimes pulling a single rune is all that a question requires. They are deceptively simple figures, yet they have many possible meanings.They are also highly reflective, showing me what your state of energy is and how you perceive your situation. Like the Tarot cards, which have different meanings for upright and reversed cards, runes also have upright and reverse meanings, except for those runes which are non-reversible – that look the same either way.

As I get into a reading, I internally ask for guidance so that I understand what the runes are saying. Sometimes I hear or see things beyond an actual understanding of the message of the runes and I share what I see or hear.Those of you who have enjoyed having your cards read will enjoy a rune reading – they are similar in nature. However, the dual purpose of runes allows you to shift your potential future! Runes can be used for insight and divination. They are also used for rune scripting, which is kind of like writing a focused spell of intent to help you manifest the future situation you desire. When a reading has reversed runes indicating dormant or blocked energy, I sometimes ask the client if they are wanting to put the positive qualities of the reversed runes in motion. If the answer is yes, I turn the rune to it’s upright position. This is a very powerful act because it means you have the desire to change things and are willing to accept the consequences of your affirmative action. There is no right or wrong to saying yes or no. sometimes the situation or timing is not right for taking action, and that is fine, too.
