A brief History of Tarot cards

When we try to throw light into the history of tarot cards there is whole lot of confusion regarding the available facts and it becomes quite difficult to know the truth and also to understand it properly. Some people say that tarot cards evolved in a way when a ancient preachers pass their teachings to their students in a secretive way. Some believe that tarot cards evolved as means of sharing universal knowledge among people of various countries, cultures and from different ethnics. The origin of these cards has several theories supporting beliefs of its in countries like Italy, China, India or Egypt. But the oldest deck of cards can be traced back to 1400’s in countries like France, Italy, and Egypt. Initially they were created as a means of pastime for the wealthy people to spend their free time .This was due to the reason that pre-printing press that had manufactured these cards was quite expensive and information travelled quite slowly in those days. But later on they were being started to be used for the purpose of divination or fortune telling. In other countries like China tarot cards were used for playing games or fortune telling way before they found their way to Europe in 15th century. Some people believe that these tarot cards were introduced in Europe through card games that were more popular in the ancient Arabian culture. According to some of the concepts prevailed in France in 18th century it was believed that Tarot was derived from magical practices that prevailed in the ancient Egypt.

The specialty of tarot cards is that the interpretation is based on the pictorial features present on these cards. This was also necessary due to the reason that Tarot card readers come from different regions having different languages and levels of literacy. So it provided common platform for all of them to read , understand and interpret these cards. The concepts demonstrated by the pictures present on these tarot cards are universal and they are being known to everybody from thousand of years. Most of these pictures are traced back to the medieval period.
As compared to the ancient deck of cards of 14th century, 17 cards still remain even today. Tarot cards appeared to have originated from Europe in 12th century. But according to some people and comparing with the most accurate data available these cards appeared to have originated in Italy. In 15th century in Italy during festival season
These cards were brought to the public eye and they became quite famous. The invention of the printing press later acted as a booster to its publicity because now cards and books were produced on a large scale. Later on these cards several English, France added their flavor to the existing tarot cards. But at that Time due to some misconception these tarot were looked upon down by the various religious authorities.
However, quite surprisingly, science at that time was in favor of tarot cards and several
Psychologists and scientists used tarot cards to infer several properties about the mind of a person, how he views other people and the environment surrounding him.

Later on tarot cards were used to record different beliefs and ancient Greek teachings and became means of passing this information from generation to generation with quite a less chance of retribution .Various practices like astrology, Gnosticism, psychology have also played a role in developing the interpretation of pictures present on these tarot cards and ultimately the meaning of the cards.

There is a general belief that these tarot cards were created and used for the evil purpose that prevails even today .But the reality is far away from this belief and there is nothing negative or bad about these cards . Also the history of tarot cards present makes them quite older than they actually are. No matter what people believe or say the Tarot cards will continue to be used through the ages for predicting answers to the questions of past present and future.

The Role of Queens in Tarot

The Role of Queens in Tarot

Queens are mostly regarded as subtle partners of kings and play an uncertain role in many kingdoms. Some of them were simply partner of a king, while others play a stronger character in monarchies. Just like in tarot, the queen’s role solely depends on what she wants to take part in.

The queens in tarot are somewhat similar to some of the queens in history, who merely serve as embellishment and mothers of the future successors of the throne. Meanwhile, there are also queens who choose to exercise their authority and power at full control. Moreover, there are those who play as vital ambassadors and act as mediators between clashing kingdoms.

The roles of queens largely depended on their own characters whether they prefer to play a more passive or active part in schemes and political affairs. This is comparable to the Tarot Queens as each of these has their very own approaches and characters.

The tarot meanings of Queens are provision, intuition, image, support, beautification, reliability, assurance, presence, refinement, femininity, and knowledge. Just like their male counterparts, Queens are just as intense, reliable and imposing as Kings. Nevertheless, Queens are still females, thus, more delicate in their sovereignty.

If you pulled a Queen in your tarot reading, this card may likely symbolize a certain person in your life, specifically an older female who influences you in a major way. Examples are female mentors like teachers and counselor, as well as mothers and grandmothers. It may also represent a powerful woman, such as your superior, employer or supervisor.

You have to be careful though since Queens are known to be sly and controlling when it comes to dealing with people. On a lighter side, however, the Tarot Queen represents a woman who naturally cares for you and wants to love, guide, protect and nurture you.

In dealing with a Tarot Queen, it is important to consider the suit that she belongs to. For instance, if you pulled out a Queen of Swords, this may symbolize your boss who is a taskmaster with absurdly high standards.

In dealing with such type of individuals, you must try to put your self into that person’s shoes. See yourself as a Queen of Swords and imagine what you would think if you are responsible for every small detail, be in power over your employees, and need to have the composure and poise to deal with everything. Perhaps after your tarot reading, your perspective would be significantly altered.

Furthermore, you can understand your tarot reading easier by asking yourself what a certain Tarot Queen means. If you see the Queen of Wands, then perhaps you can think of someone who wants to assist you with creativity and community. While the Queen of Cups may emerge if someone wants to directly speak to your instincts, the Queen of Pentacles may allow you to notice that there is someone out there who is concerned with your physical status. Lastly, pulling out the Queen of Swords may remind you that there is someone who wants sharpness and accuracy from you.

Knowing the Kings in the Tarot Court

Kings were known as powerful rulers whose power was believed to be a divine entitlement, chosen by God and provided with autonomous sovereignty over a land and its tenants. With the quote ‘power corrupts’, it is illustrated that kings in the past cannot seem to control their selves without any limitations. Fortunately, the Kings in tarot are not portrayed this way.

The supremacy of the kings in the ancient era, specifically in 1215, was restricted by a law known as the Magna Carta. However, this noticeably changed during the Glorious Revolution in 1688. Contradictory to their roles in tarot, kings, including the rest of their royal family, were able to hold on to absolute power.

Nonetheless, there are similarities between the Kings in tarot and the historical kings and this is their role as the top dog of their suits. They symbolize expertise of the abilities and achievements of their suit and are the prime mover behind the feat within their kingdom.

However, the power of the Kings in tarot is restricted to their suit and is held by their individual strong and weak points. Even though they are not always portrayed as men, they definitely have the excellence of mastery and leadership.

In the tarot, Kings usually embody older individuals with utmost knowledge and maturity, and people who have gained mastery of their selves and their surroundings via formidable experiences and skills.

Again, the Kings in tarot are not commonly seen as the oppressive monarchs and erratic rulers that are usually described in history and sometimes in the present life. In the court cards, Kings generally signify parts wherein spiritual seekers struggle to master, and provide the idea that one should cooperatively counsel another to collect your supplies, unite all of your soldiers, assemble all your powers, concentrate all your competence upon adeptness of no less than one area of endeavor.

When you see a King in your tarot reading, it may symbolize a father figure or a counselor, a person of influence or a boss, or even your own self in a more composed, more clever, more established mental state.

The tarot meanings of Kings are authority, dominance, control, masculinity, order, responsibility, sound judgment, responsibility, status, strategy and wisdom. These features are only applicable depending on the suit or kingdom that the King belongs to. The following describes the meaning of several kings in tarot.

  • Kingdom of Wands – Ergo, the king in this tarot suit, provides enchantment to you awareness and handles with social connections, creativity, inspiration and spirituality.
  • Kingdom of Cups – The King in this tarot kingdom manages issues of the heart, love, intuition and emotion.
  • Kingdom of Swords – The King of this tarot suit of swords dares you to fight with your mental, intellect, thoughts, communication and strategy pursuits. He represents your mental status and requests you to hone the blade of your mind.
  • Kingdom of Pentacles – The King in this tarot kingdom represents an earthly world of health, money, home and vocation.
  • Kings in tarot cards

The Tarot’s Knights in Shining Armor

In a tarot reading, it is not only the kings and queens that should be regarded as important characters since even the knights or horsemen also have their own significance. Tarot Knights may either be upright or dishonorable and they may also have positive or negative attributes and deeds.

It is important to bear in mind during a tarot reading that the primary element of Knights is fire, which is the resourceful, active strength that stimulates plans and symbolizes how things get done and completed.

When you get to pull out a knight in your tarot reading, remember that this character goes on missions; so try to ask yourself what his quest is and what he is aiming to carry out. Moreover, you must take into consideration the Knight’s suit since this will let you know on how this character deals with the mission and what is the most significant concern for him.

During your tarot reading, take note that there are many tarot meanings of knights and they include mobility, action, passion, vitality, impulse, determination, initiation, exuberance, enthusiasm, advantage and facilitating. All of these meanings were interpreted via a simple game of chess.

In a chess game, it is noticeable how the knight has an odd but very wise array of movement on the chessboard. Its special ‘L’ move can ultimately provide real damage to a foe. This clever movement is also applicable when a Knight court card is drawn during a tarot reading.

Moreover, a Knight’s standard movement is noted in a tarot reading. Knights are the characters who execute quests on the front lines. In a kingdom, they are considered as the right arm of the law as knights facilitate rules and regulations, the order of the people and the execution of the laws.

One of the four Knights is the Knight of Swords, which is represented as the white horse whose function is to conquer. Drawing this court card in a tarot reading signifies precision, scheme and astute when it comes to carrying out mental control. Furthermore, this court card represents balance of your thoughts as well as how mental challenges are faced with an effectual communication.

You may also take note the importance of pulling out a Knight of Pentacles in a tarot reading. This is symbolized as a black horse whose function is to determine. This represents the material world of health, work, home and money and represents someone or something that requires action and tactics in your career and family life.

In addition, you may also be introduced to Ergo, the Knight of Wands, during a tarot reading. This character is represented by a sandy horse whose function is to battle. This Knight signifies a world that is related to your social environment, spirituality and inspiration.

Lastly, Ergo tries to discover control between his rational, ingenious appetency and his hot-blooded individuality. In a tarot reading, he may also symbolize someone or something that encourages you to social activism and ignites your artistic side.

Understanding a Tarot Reading

Understanding a Tarot Reading

tarot_readingA tarot reading centers around the idea that the cards can be utilized to get an idea about the present and possible future events of a querent or a certain person who seeks for information.

Some people are of the view that individuals that provide tarot reading services are steered by a greater divine power like Gaia; whereas others think that the tarot cards aid them into entering their unconscious or their very own imaginative subconscious mind.

Tarot readings are usually obtained from Medieval Alchemy and from the Jewish spiritualism of Kabbalah. They are generally performed using tarot spreads. The tarot cards’ positions in the spread each indicate various facets concerning the seeker’s question and also aids in giving clear readings.

The simple spread, for example, may either include past, present and future spreads as well as a one card or a three card. This type of spread is easier for the person who will be performing the tarot reading since it provides only the basic information about a situation.

For instance, a past, present and future spread typically entails three to six cards that are arranged into three columns. The tarot reading of the querent’s past or the events that had led to the seeker’s present situation are read in the first column.

Meanwhile, the querent’s present or the events that are currently happening to the seeker are illustrated in the second column of tarot cards. Lastly, a futuristic tarot reading can be obtained from the last column.

In general, the simple spread in a tarot reading can be used in various situations to persuade people to face their problems or to try to explain the best way to proceed in a certain situation. One should also bear in mind that the interpretation of any situation where time is concerned can also be obtained from a past, present and future reading.

On the other hand, if a querent wants a more profound explanation about their situation, then a tarot reading may be obtained from a Celtic cross spread, which is one of the most popular spreads used by tarot card readers.

The Celtic cross is made up of cards that are spread into a cross-like figure with a line up of four cards to the side. With this type of spread, the card position is regarded as signifying a certain aspect of a situation. In this type of tarot reading, there are card positions that aid in making clear the events that lead to a present situation.

Also, there are positions in a tarot reading that provide information about what is working for or against the present situation, what actions made by the querent to influence the situation as well as its ultimate outcome.

Hence, in every tarot reading, tarot spreads are regarded well since these can aid in identifying an interpretation and also aids the querent in taking advantage of his reading. Lastly, tarot spreads aid the tarot card reader to make certain that they correctly read the cards, thus, providing all the information needed by a querent.

Fools don’t know how to play cards- Tarot Readings and its’ history

Fools don’t know how to play cards- Tarot Readings and its’ history

Tarot reading is used for the purpose of individual alteration of one’s self.  Today the use of tarot is far the most popular divination tool for spiritual introspection in the western world.

Tarot cards have been around since the 15th century and were originally used by the mystics of their time.  During the rise of religions such as Anglicanism, and Catholicism, mystics needed to hide their use of divination due to persecution.  To do so they formulated divination by using normal playing cards and hid their work by calling it “games”.

Thus the tarots suits correspond with the suits of the conservative playing cards.

The first known tarot cards were created in Milan Italy, where individualised illustrations were added to the pack.  The earliest known Tarot decks were hand painted thus the number of produced decks were limited.  It was only after the invention of the printing press that the massive manufactured cards became probable.

In 1910 the use of Tarot boomed with the production and publication of one of the most sought out decks, the Rider Waite Smith Tarot.  The decks popularity was due to the fact that it included figurative images related to the divinatory significance of the numeric cards.

Because of this development, various adaptations of the tarot have been created throughout history and now we have a variety of tarot decks to choose from.

Tarot cards are usually read by a tarot reader but these days anyone can readily buy a deck at your local bookstore or mystical shop as they are mass printed with an instruction booklet provided.

Interestingly what people don’t realise is that tarot reads your current path based on your thoughts.  So a reading one day can change direction if you have made a decision from the last reading you had to the current read.

One tarot reader’s way of reading may differ from another tarot reader- as each individual tarot reader will interpret a card based on what they see within it.  This is why it is best (if you are choosing a tarot reading) to stick with one tarot reader instead of roaming around to various readers.  This essentially will confuse you and play with your emotions and thus hinder the prediction” that was stated initially.

Essentially at its core, tarot empowers and guides you to your fullest potential, leading you to discover your inner self.  It is a roadmap of our life, from the past; the present and the possible future, changing are revealing its course once we make vital decisions in this often baffling world.

Recently in its ever increasing evolution the tarot has inspired a new wave of decks called oracle cards.  Influenced by the tarot, they do not follow a traditions structure as tarot does but rather has their own individualised divinatory meanings within each deck.

Whether you use traditional decks (such as the Rider Waite Smith Deck) or modern decks (such as Doreen Virtues Angel Cards) Tarot can help you understand yourself better and will guide you to your desires with assurance.
